2006 Cadillac CTS Location of oil filter

2006 Cadillac CTS 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I know the element is the component to be changed, but where is the canister and how is it to be removed?

On the left(drivers) side of the engine, on the top between the master cylinder and upper engine cover, there is an aluminum housing with a hex on top of it(24mm). That is your oil filter housing. I think it is fairly close to the oil dipstick.
