Broken trans axle at the CV joint

I had it towed to a local mechanic, where they replaced it. After replacing it they now say the car will not move and requires a new transmission. I am wondering what would fail simultaneously in the transmission as the axle shaft? It is a manual transmission, so failure, to me, seems very strange. I am concerned they want to replace the most expensive item, when i'm not convinced that is the issue.

Clearly without knowing all the details and not looking at the vehicle it is hard to say but in general terms and assuming they are not trying to sell you a transmission that is not needed, what probably happened is the transmission failed which is what broke the CV axle. So they would not have known the transmission failed without fixing the axle first. The fact that you can't drive the vehicle with a broken CV axle would prevent them from knowing the transmission didn't move.

CV axles normally don't just break. They break when they are exposed to a large shock or stress which would make sense that the transmission failed and it broke the CV axle.
