when abruptly braked brief burning rubber smell?

Noticed when abruptly braked brief burning rubber smell and the same with applying a lot of pressure to the gas pedal. The car was brand new and was inspected prior to me leasing it. Is this normal? Is there such a thing as breaking in the brakes and gas pedals? I don't know if it was just the outside air or the actual friction from pressing the pedal.
