My parents put in a used motor in this car and it runs pretty good when warm. I bought it from them and it doesnt like to drive when cold even in summer so I have to let it warm up alot. Once warm she runs pretty good but lately it really runs rough at idle when cold and has died a couple of times. Also it sometimes acts like its missing when I drive through the first gear until. I did notice a gas smell at idle when it was running rough. Today it seems fine but for 2 days there it wasnt all good.

I must add those 2 days it was very hot outside and high humidity after a rain. No check engine light on, and I replaced the aircleaner as it was somewhat dirty. Anything I should look for?

you could have a weak oxygen sensor, taking extra time for it to go into closed loop operation, but not bad enough to create a check engine light. also , you need to check the engine coolant temp sensor, if that is also weak, it will tell the computer that its cold and the computer will dump extra fuel to try and warm it up, hence the fuel smell.

I took it for a drive and today at idle it ran fine, warmed up it ran pretty good here than there on a 50 mile trip it seemed like it missed on accleration a couple times.

Im thinking spark plugs.

well yes, spark plugs are always a good start, could have a couple of fouled plugs, good. but, I still would consider doing a throttle body cleaning. can only help. also the wires could be bad, if you havent done a tune up in a while I would, like you said, consider spark plugs and wires, if it doesn solve the problem you may want to consider what I suggested in the beginning of the post. keep me posted

thoughts?

obviously moisture is getting into something, so i would once again , maticulously , check all of the ignition wiring,/coil pack for cracks or anywhere moisture can be let in.
