My father has a 1989 skylark, 2.5 L 4 cylinder engine. The alternator, starter and belts were all replaced. The high pitched squealing just started with the alternator and upon inspection I noticed the belt for the alternator is being chewed up. There is the black dust from the belt wearing all around the alternator and surronding areas. The belt snapped yesterday, put a new belt on adn drove from Mass to Penn and back. Same day upon return squealing is back and more wearing dust is noticed. There is no other electrical problems and I feel his mechanic is doing something drastically wrong with the repairs.

Hi:
There is a chance the belt is stretching and needs readjusted, but I really believe something is locking up to cause it to break that fast. The next time it starts making noise, I would open the hood and check if there is any smoke being created from friction. Is the alt the only thing that has the black belt dust on it?
