Went to garage to start car.......Upon entering
the cabin there was a ''ticking'' or ''clicking' sound
and there was no power when trying to start car.
Clicking noise continued.........

Hooked up battery charger, got battery charged to
12.5 volts.........remained overnight, checked battery
next morning, still at acceptable 12.5 volts. Car
was started..........no clicking going on....all systems
worked. Checked voltage with car engine running
and it showed a charge of 14.4 volts.....seems that
is about right.

My question is: What the (?) happened and what
should I check to make sure I'm not stranded or
something. The Battery is a delco 6 yr and it is 5
yrs old., but obviously will still hold a good charge.

Is there something like a relay or fuze that did not
work right that allowed this battery to run down?

Although battery can have 12.5 volts, it is the amperage that starts car. Battery can read 12.5 volts but may only have 200CCA, which would not (or barely) start car.

5 Years is about the time that you would experience battery problems, especially if car sits in garage for long periods of time.

I would take it to any autoparts store and have charging system tested. They will test voltage and CCA. CCA would be measured against rated amps.
They wil also test alternator, starter draw and any parasitic drains on battery.
This is a free service.
