I have a 1996 Buick Regal Custom with a 3800 Series II engine.
It seems that a connecting rod bearing is busted and the engine is making a knocking sound.

Can the engine be removed from the top or do I have to drop the engine and tranny from the bottom.

Appreciate any help.

oh yes, it can definitely be removed from the top! :)

when you start the process let me know and I'd be glad to talk you through it. 8)

I've been down that road many times.

I am thinking of replacing the crankshaft only on this engine. What other parts do I need to replace since I will have the engine removed.

if it is a rod bearing that's making noise you should be able to determine which one it is before you get into it. with it running you can unplug one injector at a time and listen for the change in sound..........the one that causes the most drastic change in the knocking noise is usually the failed bearing

I have managed to take the engine out and I am dismanteling it.

I got the pushrods mixed up and a couple of them fell on the floor while I was removing the heads.

Is it ok to reuse these or should I replace them.

sorry it took me so long to reply, I was out of town for a couple of days.

the push rods are all the same length on this engine. as long as they aren't bent you should be ok. :)

Thanks for your reply Xowey.

BTW the engine is rebuilt and back in the car. It is working fine. I am pleased so far. The 500 KM oil change just came up, so I will have a look at the oil coming out of the engine.

I have a question though. The temperature guage stabilizes at the second mark when the car is moving however as soon as I stop the temperature rises to the third mark and then falls back when I start moving again. The guage has 4 marks before it gets into the red. I changed the thermostat and the fans seem to be working fine, the coolant level is fine also. I was wondering if this is normal.

Any ideas.

oh yea, that's normal with the a/c off, the fans only run above a certain engine temperature (about 225 f)
with the a/c on they come on with a/c pressure activation
is it more stabalized with the a/c on?
