Hi:
The only place that will have the proper equipment to test the system is a dealer. Follow the guide below for security system relearn

THe only place that has the proper equipment to diagnose the problem is a dealer. If you turn the key to the run position and let it there for 10+ minutes, it should over ride the system so you can get it to a shop to see why it is not working properly.

The security light started to flash so we did that wait 10 seconds thing an that didn't do anything. So then we took the battery off hoping to reset the system and that didn't work, Then today when we went to the car none of the lights are coming on at all and its not the battery, There is only a dinging sound but no lights, Also I have read forums, what is a valid mechanical coded unlearned ignition key?And where can I get one?

Could be the key or the sensor in the ignition switch.... try this and see if it helps

GM PASS LOCK RELEARN- Ignition to "run" position, try to start and let key return to "run" position
Approx ten minutes security light will go off
Turn key "off" and wait 5 seconds
Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 relearns.
Turn key off, then start it

i just fixed a car problem just like it.I would first take the key to the dealership and have it tested. they have a machine they insert the key into to see if the chip in the key is good. if the key is good i would install a ney key and tumbler. there are two wires coming out of it and go to a connector under the dash. after fifteen years the wires will break.

If it won't even crank, check the battery first. Use an inexpensive digital voltmeter to measure the voltage. If it's around 12.0 volts, it's discharged, commonly due to a defective generator. If you find closer to 11.0 volts or less, suspect the battery of having a shorted cell.
