distributor ignition contol module switch

I have a 1984 lasabre, 307 engine, 8 cyl, 4 door sedan. Yesterday I changed the plugs, wires, and disdributor and rotor. The clerk at auto zone told me to gap the plugs at 080, however, when I took the old ones out, they were gaped at 060, as were the new plugs I had just bought. So I put the new ones in at 060. So my question is this: would the difference in gap size cause the ignition control switch located in the distributor to go bad? If not, what are some of the reasons a ignition control switch would go bad? And would this cause the car not to start?

There is a white sticker under the hood in the engine compartment that will state the correct gap.
According to Autolite, it may be .080 or .045 depending on the 8th digit of your VIN.

Too large of a gap or worn plugs can cause damage to the secondary ignition components. Not sure what you mean by ignition control switch...module maybe?
