My temperature gauge starts going up when idling in traffic or at a light. The thermostat has been replaced, and the system flushed. It has been put on a machine and tested at a gm dealer. The car is not overheating yet, but the gauge, which normally sets at the notch below half, rides up to half and slightly beyond when idling, something it never did before. I noticed recently that when I had the heat on, it did not do this. When I put the switches down on cool air, it started to do it again when idling. The dealer said my fans are coming on when needed, and the gauge stays in an acceptable range, but this is something my car did not do previously, and it worries me when I sit and watch the gauge go up when idling.

As long as the gauge doesn't go into the danger area, you should be fine. If the fans are coming on, the t-stat has replaced, and the system has been flushed, there isn't much more you can do.

The heater, on the other hand, acts as an additional small radiator. That is why your gauge stayed lower.
