It's best to replace the entire axle with a rebuilt one, since it doesn't cost a lot more than a CV joint and boot, disassembling it is messy, and it's not always easy to reassemble properly.
1. Remove wheel and hub nut.
2. Remove ball joint pinch bolt and pry joint off control arm. Also remove either tie rod end or strut- to-knuckle bolts or both. If you separate the strut from the knuckle, mark the relation of the cam on the head of the wheel alignment adjustment bolt to the strut housing.
3. push outboard end of axle through hub and steering knuckle and pull it out of transmission.
4. Assembly is reverse. This is also a good opportunity to replace seals in transmission and inboard side of the steering knuckle. If you removed the steering knuckle from the strut, take care to get the cam bolt back as close as possible to where it was. You may need to have the wheels realigned anyway.
