Could you please tell me how much it should cost me to have a fuel pump replaced in my 1999 Buick Century? Including a separate price for parts and labor in Kittery, Maine please? I just had the oxygen sensors replaced in the car could this have anything to do with the fuel pump going? My brother and the mechanic thought it was the fuel pump because it completely stalled out and I kept trying to start it over and over there was no gas smell. My brother said I should have smelled gas after we kept trying to turn the engine over about 10 times and we smelled no gas. Could this be the catalytic converter gone bad because I ran it a couple of weeks after the oxygen sensors went bad and ran it even though the service engine soon was on all that time?

First step is to get it running. Check the fuel pressure to see what it is.

IT must be 41-47 psi. I assume this is the 3.1 motor.

IF it is out of spec, fair chance the pump is bad. The filter will need replacement at the same time. I would use a delphi pump on this. Prices would need to be checked locally. Off the top of my head I would think $500-750 as a guess depending on what they run into.

Once it is running, have a fuel injection service and/or carbon removal procedure such as a motorvac for the fuel sytem.
this may clean the excessive carbon off the converter to expose the precious meteals that enable the catalyst to work in the converter.

Do I have to go to a special place to have the above done or can any mechanic do it?

Most shops should be capable, just call and ask if they have a motorvac machine.
