Brakes work fine under normal use but if I have to press the pedal hard or push the pedal all the way to the floor the pedal will stay down and the brakes will stay engaged I can put my foot behind the pedal and slowly pull it up and the brakes will disengage.

This sounds like the brake booster or master cylinder needs to be replaced, with the brake pedal stuck down can you loosen the brake master to see if the pedal comes back if not the booster is bad. here is how you can replace it:

1. Remove vacuum hose from check valve and master cylinder retaining nuts.
2. Pull master cylinder forward so it clears mounting studs and move to one side. Support cylinder to avoid stress on hydraulic lines.
3. Remove power unit to dash nuts.
4. Remove brake pedal pushrod retainer and disconnect pushrod from pin.
5. Remove power brake unit from vehicle.
6. Reverse procedure to install.

Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can see what's going on? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

It was my brake master cylinder. I replaced the brake booster about 2 years ago because the pedal was very hard to push down. I just pressed the pedal all the way down and it got stuck so I loosened the master cylinder like you said and the pedal came up. I replaced the master cylinder and it is now working properly. thank you I appreciate the help.
