Every so often while driving, the brake light comes on and when pressure is applied to the brakes they sound like they are grinding and really rough. They only way to clear the problem is to stop the car and turn the engine off. Then restart the car and majority of the time things go back to normal.

This is surely to be telling you that you need to replace the brakes. Most likely the front but both front and rear should be checked.

What is happening is the brake light is just a monitor on the fluid level in the reservoir. So when the light comes on, that means the fluid is low and this could be due to a leak or the fact that the pads are worn and it takes more fluid to apply the pads because the piston in the caliper has to travel further now that the pads are worn. Add in the noise that they are making and it tells us they need replaced. Do not just top off the brake fluid. This should never be done because there is a reason it is low and that needs to be found or you may find yourself with no brakes and that is not good.

Here are some guides that will walk you through how to change them:

Let us know what you find and we can go from there. Thanks

It just hit me that I forgot to give you this guide as well that talks about this light in more detail.

Let me know if you still have questions. Thanks

Thanks for your reply and help. My only question is, that the 4-7 days i going between this thing happening, my brakes seem just fine. No grinding, noise, or problems only when the the brake light comes on intermittently. I have not kept an eye on the fluid. It just seemed to as if when this problem happens, it's turning on the ebrake maybe?

I would suggest checking the brake fluid level just to make sure it is at or above the full line. If it is there are other things that can cause this including the parking brake because the brake light will turn on when setting the parking brake and if the switch is faulty then the light will come on intermittently. Let's just make sure the fluid is not low and we can go from there because not only is the fluid the most likely cause but it is critical that it is not low.
