My rotor on the driver front was getting extremely hot and smelly and smoky, so my husband changed the caliper because the rotor and brake pads were still good. So we bought a brand new caliper, put it on and the same thing is still happening. Hot smelly smoky rotor on front drivers side.

Hi,

More than likely you have an issue with the rubber hoses going to the caliper. If these got hot or are failing then when you press the brakes the rubber line just swells and the piston of the caliper is not releasing.

If this is not the case it could be the master cylinder but this is unlikely.

As for not replacing the pads and rotors, I would just make sure they do not have blue spots or are glazed. This is caused by overheating and the only fix is to replace them. If you end up replacing them then just do both sides. You don't want them to be different sizes.
