My brake lights stay on I had to jiggle the wires just to get to start on the safety neutral switch. I do not know what I need to change.

Not every problem is just a matter of changing parts. You need to inspect the brake light switch at the brake pedal to determine if it is being released or not.

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus; it has been a great car; however, within the past 2 years the car will not go out of park. We have replaced the brake switch twice. When getting my car inspected this year, we found out that I my brake lights were not working. It seems the time when we cannot get the car out of park the brake lights will not work. The brake switch, which was replaced 30 days prior to getting my car, inspected. Since it was under warranty, they replace it again. However, it is still happening. Never have I worry about this, but not every time I get into my car, if it doesn't go into park, I worry I have no brake lights

My brake lights stay on both, when I'm driving and when the car is parked and off. I have tried to look at the fuse box, but it does not seem to be the problem. How can I find the problem and fix it? Thanks in advance for you help.

Check the brake light switch under the dash at the top of the brake pedal. Make sure it is properly adjusted and not damaged.

Dashboard warning light for brakes stays on unless it is warmed completely and you have mashed the throttle hard, then it will go off for a while.
Seems to idle faster at startup, than it used to, poor mileage and a jerky ride at highway speeds. At its worst, very noticeable at constant 40mph. No codes. Disconnect battery, and slight improvement for a short time.

Red brake light on is an indication of E.brake on
or malfunction of the brake hydraulic system and need to be checked

Brakes problem
2002 Ford Taurus V6 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 68000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
When stopping and then going I noticed my brake light on my instument panel comes on then goes off. I have heard a squelling sound when braking. Are my brake pads going or could there just be dust in the brakes? I have ABS brakes.

Thanks,

Hi there,

Check the brake fluid level, it may just be a low fluid warning coming on as the fluid surges when the car lurches. Best to have the brakes inspected as well, as the low fluid will be a result of brake pad wear, or fluid leaking.

Hi Kelly.

Sorry to hear about your car, as long as nobody was hurt, that the main thing. I am unable to comment on you last car, only because i live in Australia and we don't have that model here. I will not use this forum for a used car report breakdown, but if you like i can IM or Email you with some tips a bit later on today or this evening (my time)

Thanks again. I certainly do not want you to get any trouble for giving me advise on what to look for when buying a used vechile on this website. I realize I should not have asked as this was not the purpose of this website!

I appreciate your help anyways, I am sure when I do find a new car I'll have more questions to ask.

Thanks Again,

Kelly :>

all 3 rear brake lights are on and won't go off! Brakes seem to be functioning fine. Brake fluid okay, we released the emergency brake and pumped the brake pedal. Lights stay on even with engine off and key pulled out. What else can we try?? Solutions needed. Owner is a college student that can't afford large repair bill. Thanks Glenda in Dallas

2001 ford taraus sedan...all at once the following happened. 1. cruise control stop working, 2. When car ignition turned off, brake lights stay on, 3. Transaxle indicator light stays on and gearshift can be moved without stepping on brake.

I think all 3 problems are connected some how. I have replaced fuse for brake lights but no change. Does anyone have an idea?

It sounds like the brake light switch is bad. It is located at the top of the brake pedal under the dash. Check it.

Thanks all. 2000 Taurus Wagon, 195 000km. The brake warning light on the dash stays on most of the time. The brake fluid resevoir is full, and the low level sensor plugged in. The parking brake works, and the switch on the pedal appears in working order. When the light has gone off, I've applied the parking brake and noticed that the light did not come on...

This must be a pretty simple circuit. Does anybody have a wiring diagram? Does applying the parking brake just ground out the switch? I'm hoping this is another common Taurus problem. I need to get this fixed for a safety inspection.

Thanks!

Unplug the connector at the master cylinder to see if the light comes on. If it does not, plug it back in and retest.

One way of testing the switch is to use an ohmmeter to test for continuity. When fluid level is good, there should be no continuity between the 2 terminals of the switch.

It appears the ABS module is the cause, as there seems to be no communication with it. The ABS/traction control lights don't self-test on startup, and it seems the t/c is not working. The switch for the parking brake was faulty, and has been repaired. I replaced the switch at the master cylinder with no luck, but found the light stays off when it's unplugged. Good enough!

Thanks!

Why does my break warning light stays on when I don't have the parking breaks on. I don't know where to find the break fluid so I can check it.

Yes, a fault with the ABS system can cause the light to stay on. You would need to get a scan done to check for trouble codes and proceed from there.

low brake fluid is the next obvious cause. you check the fluid level in the master cylinder which is on the drivers side of the vehicle, mounted on the firewall ,almost directly under the drivers side wiper blade.

My Driver side brake light is not coming on when I tap the brakes. My rear window brake light and passenger side brake light come on though however. And my rear lights that are on all all the time are working fine too. I checked the fuse box and that looks fine. What do you think could be the problem?

I would start by checking the bulb. Make sure it is fully seated in the socket, and that it is not burned out. If the bulb is OK, then check for loose connectors, broken ground, or wiring harness chafing.

prblem is the brake light switch located on the brake pedal. it is a common problem that Ford addressed with a recall. Contact your local dealer to find out if it applies to your vehicle.
