If the wiring is getting hot right at the switch my hypothesis is either the switch itself is causing it
or
The connection to the switch may be corroded or maybe wasn't fully plugged in
or
crap happens!
If the wires are messed up only near the switch, you can easily fix the problem.
I looked up the parts and made screenshots (you'll have to go to their site or another auto parts store site to see additional info as these pics are not links!)
There are two types of switches for a vehicle like yours.
One has 2 wires to it, the other has 3 (as you will see in my pics.
I suggest that you replace the switch and the pigtail connector to it, provided that your wires are not damaged too far from the switch.
The pigtail will hopefully eliminate the burned portions with new wire to spare.
