Help!! My barbie car smells like gas!!!!

Good morning, I was hoping you could help me out with a problem I'm having with my '99 BMW Z3 roadster (74,000 ml). A few days ago I noticed a VERY strong gasoline smell...even at 70 mph with the top down. Yesterday the check engine light popped on. Any ideas???

*unsure if this is important.....last summer the water pump went out and shot the fan into the radiator.
