Water on the engine 2003 x-5 3.0

I have a 2003 BMW X-5 3.0 with 90,000 miles. I was recently told by someone doing other repairs on the car to get rid of it ASAP. The cause was there is water on the engine. What is the signigicance of water on the engine and how difficult is this to repair.
