Blower won't turn off?

Your problem is the final stage that controls the fan needs to be replaced. It is located just behind and below the glove box behind the upper carpet trim. Just remove the carpet trim and you can see it, the connector is a black 5-pin, you'll see its real easy. The final stage may be available online somewhere. The dealer will have these as a stock item, they fail all the time. The wiring diagrams for your blower system are attached below as well as the only pic I could find of the final stage units location

Dr Hagerty...I have a similar problem with my 2000 528i. Where is the final stage that controls the fan in this vehicle and how do I get to it?

it is below and behind the glovebox.
first remove the plastic cover just above the passenger foot well area by pulling it out(it pops out, no tools required) then remove the screw that holds the carpet in place and the carpet pulls out to the rear.
the final stage is behind a piece of open cell foam(if the foam is still there) remove the torx screws and install the final stage. you kind of have to "stand on your head" to see the final stage. if you have already purchased a replacement you will be able to visualize its installation.
its pretty straight forward, give yourself half an hour.
BMW warranty time says about 15 minutes.

While the heater was operating, The digital display began flickering then went blank. The heater now remains on even when the key is off and out. I replaced the final stage module, but the motor continues to run as soon as I reinstall the fuse (with the key out). The digital display still is blank. Any other ideas besides replacing the final stage?

Yes. Fixed. The final stage was fine all along. The problem was the climate control computer. Bought a used one on eBay for $150. Works like a charm.

We just bought a 2003 BMW X5 and when we got it home we realized the heater fan was not working. We called the previous owner and of course he said it worked before. The fan speed indicator does work but the fan does not. When we open the rear vents and turn the dial to red (heat) we can hear and feel the fan. This does not happen to the front vents when we turn the front dial to red. We have tried the auot settings and the manual settings. Is there anything we missed?

The final stage that controls the fan may be caput.

that the rear fan is working fine and the aircondition as well, eveything on the pannel is working only the fan is not.

I didn't really understand what you mean!!

Go to Realoem.com and look for part number 64-11-6-923-204. This is the potted semi-conductor device that controls the fan and it will require replacement. It is called a final stage.

The key(s) will require reinitialization. Go to the car, open the drivers door and get in. Shut the door. Put the key in the ignition and turn it on, then take it out and then hold the unlock button and while holding the unlock button push the lock button 3 times, then release both buttons. Then what should happen is that all the doors will lock and then unlock. If there is another key(s) then do the same process of holding the unlock button and pressing the lock button 3x. Do not open the doors or insert the 2nd key in the ignition for the procedure, just press the buttons on the subsequent keys (up to 4 keys) When you open the door or start the car, the initialization session is then over. The dealer charges for this operation, can we count on you for a reasonable donation today?

When I put the heater on the defrost mode the fan speed does not go to high. Is it the blower motor reisistor?

Could you tell me if the fan speed changes when you go to defrost or when you change any other setting? I'm asking because the speed control does not usually fail in this manner. The device that controls the fan speed is called the final stage and it is possible that it has been compromised and I do not wish to give poor advice. Thanks for using 2carpros!

I have a 2001 BMW X5, 4.4i with 60,000 miles. I recently replaced the alternator. Two days later, I got into the car and started the engine...all was normal except that my environmental control panel indicated the AC was blowing FULL but there was no air from the vents. The compressor was working, and the rear fan was working and cooling. I removed two 7.5 amp AC fuses and they were good. The 50A main blower fuse is good. There is one interesting factor.. I pulled one of the 7.5A ac fuses with engine running to verify it was correct fuse (compressor stopped) and when I replaced it the main fan started working. However, when I moved the car it stopped. It came back on once about 30 seconds later then stopped. Do you have any ideas about this issuue? Thanks JP

the problem you describe is the final stage unit for the a/c blower has failed.reinstall all the fuses and replace the final stage unit,it is located in the passenger footwell area on the right side of the "heater box" (the plastic housing that contains the heat exchangers)

I've also got a 2001 X5 4.4i with a similar issue. Be advised that my wiring harness in the passenger side foot well has shorted out and melted causing loss of power to the fan blower motor. This might be your problem too!

I have seen the final stage wiring harness fail on a couple of X5. melted at the connector to the final stage

the blower in myX5 suddenly stopped working. all the displays are functioning but no air is blowing. I checked the fuses in the glove compartment and they look ok to me. Never had this trouble before. Any Ideas??

the final stage will require replacement. amazon.com will have a Bentley repair manual that will guide you through the process.

The aircondtioner blower comes on when the car is turned off. The battery went dead and I replaced it but after 5 days it went down again. Itested the alternator with the car running and got 14.3 volts. I do not think it is the alternator causing the battery to die but the airconditioner blower coming on when car is turned off.

Check for a key off draw and consider replacement of the final stage for the blower. 64-11-8-385-549 is the part number.
