Transmission problem
2002 BMW X5 V8 All Wheel Drive Automatic

50 Miles ago had front brakes and CV joints fixed, just started driving the car again and after 75 miles or so I got a "transmission failure message" on my message center. Transmission aways worked well no slippage noticable aways shifted crisply. When it failed it went into neutral and would no shift into drive.
My question is do you think it might be the transmission control module or complete mechanical failure of the unit with no notice? car has 97K miles on it and always been maintained by the dealer

The problem is difficult to assess from a distance. What I would start with is to sample the transmission fluid, for possible contamination and for proper level. And to perform a"short test" with the factory scanning equipment called a GT-1, for fault codes. Then I would be better able to make a recommendation.
