The car is a 1995 840 Ci. The plastic moulding around the left mirror is broken. How do I remove the mirror glass?

first, pull the mirror out at the bottom as far as it will go.
there will be a plastic locking ring, it is white.
with a pick tool, rotate this ring and the mirror releases.
the remaining disassembly is straight forward as you will see
