2001 BMW 740 Coolant System

2001 BMW 740 130000 miles

My "Check Coolant Level" light keeps coming on but
I am not sure if the car needs to be cold and off when checking it, or cold and running. I can't find
the answer in the manual. Thank you.

Open the radiator when cold, no need to start it up.

if you want to check coolant cold means the car has to stay at least 8 hours these are bmws
also the sensor may has gone it's under the expansion tank pluged in
