Engine Mechanical problem
2000 BMW 540i V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 170xxx miles
2000 540iT
Car: 170,xxx miles
Motor: 64,xxx miles (long block rebuild)
Greetings.
I'm getting a cylinder 1 and cylinder 7 mis-fire when attempting to do any real acceleration (merging in traffic, on-ramps, etc). However, I am un-able to replcate this on-demand. The car was a private party sale, and I've had a pre-buy inspection done. I've had the car for about 2 weeks.
In the inspection, it was noted that the valve cover gaskets are leaking, and the timing chain tensioner needs replacement. I've tried to be reasonably gentile, but if I didn't care about performance, I'd use my '89 accord as a daily driver.
Plugs were done at 170,006. I've checked all 8 coil packs for engine oil in the pack/connector. Most recent attempt (0 miles ago) was swapping packs 1/2, and 6/7. I have not yet driven the car, though it does start w/o error.
The timing chain tensioner looks fairly straight forward, but I'm concerned about skipping teeth, or putting excess tension on the chain. Thoughts?
