power steering 1997 528 i

I made a sharp turn today and the steering of the car became very hard. For the past month i have heard a noise when i turn, but nothing too loud. Does this car use power steering fluid? what can be the problem?

It is a plastic reservoir about 6" tall with a black plastic screw top located near the left front shock tower.
You can use automatic transmission fluid.
