my BMW 528i 2000 stationwagon with 124000 miles emitted a yellowish goo-like fluid out of my engine.
I brought it to a mechanique (non-BMW) and he told me that the engine blew up and has to change the entire engine? and charging me a large amount. What are guidelines or questions I should ask before i have it repaired?

Sounds like water in the oil. Those 6 cyl had an issue with cylinder heads cracking. Is that the only thing he used to determine the engine was "blown up"?If you put good oil in it , does it run? You may want to find someone that has some experience with BMW's.This may just be a cracked head.

My ears must have been burning Jack. The cylinder head casting is possibly not the only issue with the M-54 motor as there have been reports of the threads pulling out on the aluminum blocks, this is not a job for someone with no BMW experience. Special tools for the correct cam timing and vanos position and crankshaft location are essential.
