Transmission problem
1993 BMW 525i Automatic 211605 miles

My transmission warning light keeps coming on and when it does, my car takes a while to accelerate. Once it accelerates, it runs fine. Before when it happened, it was only after driving for a long while, now it's happening very regularly. Could it be that my engine oil is low or could it be something worse?

Hello tawanayj

When transmission-warning light keeps coming on, it means the transmission controller has diagnosed an internal transmission fault. To diagnose the problem, a scan tool that can read transmission codes must be plugged into the vehicle diagnostic connector .The scan tool will then display the transmission code(s) that turned the warning light on. What happens next depends on the code. The code may indicate an internal performance problem then the transmission will probably need the attention of a specialist. It could also be an electrical fault, a bad sensor or solenoids.
start with checking the fluid.
Low fluid level could cause the transmission to engage slowly or not at all.
The fluid level should be checked when the fluid is hot with the engine idling,
If low ,add fluid but do not overfill because doing so can cause the fluid to become aerated, which may affect transmission operation .
Move the lever from park, neutral, drive,1,2,3 and back to park and recheck the fluid level to get proper reading.
If this does not solve the problem a scan tool can help to get the code(s).
