My father's meticulously maintained 525i threw a rod according to BMW. To repair with BMW cost will be approx. $13,000 as the car is no longer under warranty.

The car runs, but makes a bad noise at idle. Are there alternatives to the BMW repair that could be considered?

What exactly should be replaced when an engine throws a rod? Maybe I could find some less expensive replacement parts if I knew what to look for.

I think what they mean is the connecting rod bearing spun. You could install a used motor for a lot less $$$. Call (619)444-2290 and talk to John @ Autobahn dismantling, tell him Paul Hagerty sent you.
