Engine revs high

I have a 1987 325, it runs great for being almost 20 yrs old.
The problem I am having doesn't happen all the time.
Sometimes when I push in the clutch the rpm's go up instead of down (when going into 4th or 5th gear).

Could this be a clutch problem?
