1987 BMW 325 Fuel Filter

I replaced the fuel filter and just to the right of the fuel filter was another devise similar to a fuel filter.

It's about 1 1/2 in dia and about 2" long. Can I take this out and go direct from the fuel filter to the gas tank?

The lines don't go in from the ends but from the sides. So the devise is vertical.
