My 2000 323i touring BMW is overheating after long idle times. I have come to the conclusion that the fan is not coming on when the a/c is turned on. The old fan does not come on with the a/c. I got a new fan and hooked it up however, it is always on. Even if the car is off. I took the old fan and hooked it up (not installed in the proper location and it will run intermitintly). It started to run on high and startesd smoking. The new fan sees to be stuck on high also. Is there a relay and where is it located? Thank you.

the radiator fan is controlled by the digital motor electronics (DME) control unit, and it is in the front of radiator. Most likely it has failed.
