My 1993 BMW 320 (1991cc) recently started coughing and spluttering, backfiring etc. It was fine going out to the shop, but when I got in and started it, it seemed to be starved of fuel because it was backfiring and really struggling to get above 3,000 revs.
I crawled home and then when I tried to start it again, the battery just ran down and the car refused to start.

I have just been told it needs a new catalytic converter, but that replaing it is going to damage other parts of the vehicle too.

They have quoted me £700 for a new battery, catalytic convertor, labour and whatever else might be damaged.
They reckon the other parts are in a bad way.
A new catalytic converter is about £170, battery about £45.

Anyone have any idea of how big the job is and whether it is as complicated as it is being made to sound?

The converter is a bear unless you have good clearance.
