Electrical problem
1998 BMW 318 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I hope someone can help me. I have a BMW E46 318i 1998 model. The problem is that i cant open the central locking doors with the key remote control. I can only access the car by opening the drivers side door with the key.
The weird thing is that i can close the central locking doors with the key remote and internal button all the time. I also can't unlock from the lock/unlock button in the car as well.

Is there an unit that controls the lock/unlock function..?
I am hoping that someone would know what the probelm is. I hope that it is something simple? Please please help if you can

This could be an indication of a general module fault. I am not at my home computer so I dont have the site address to send to you for the repair/replacement of the general module. I will resend tonite when I return home, will this be OK with you?

i solve the problem by programing the key:

Instructions
1.
Close all the doors
2.
Open the driver's-side door, and get in the car. Shut the door.
3.
Put the key in the ignition.
4.
Turn the key from the "on" position to the "off" position five times quickly without starting the engine.
5.
Pull the key out of the ignition.
6.
Press and hold the "unlock" button on your remote.
7.
Press the "lock" button three times while continuing to hold the "unlock" button.
8.
Release the "unlock" button. Once you've released the button, the door locks will begin to cycle, indicating that the remote has been properly programmed. If this does not happen, begin again from Step 1.
9.
Put the key back into the ignition, and turn it from "on" to "off" once more to set the remote programming.

Thanks Dr. Hagerty

Step 4 can be omitted. The key to the run position and off is the correct procedure, just once, not 5 times. And you may still have a problem if the first story you presented with is true. If it is not then good luck.
