1996 BMW 318 Turn Key and no ignition

I have a 1996 318I BMW 1.9L engine Auto. When I turn the key I get power to vehicle as in the radio and air conditioning but no ignition. There is no sound at all. After about 6 -10 attempts turning the key to on and then all the way off and then back on again I eventually get ignition.

Could it be the battery in the key or something else

It is the lock assembly in the steering column telling you it is failing. Go to Realoem.com and look for part number 32-32-1-093-266. It takes some special tools and skills if you think you want to take it on, let me know.
