vehicle has 98k on it. Speedometer and fuel mileage indicator started fluctuating and then quit. odometer quit at that time as well. Cruise is also inop. Vehicle was turned off when I arrived to my destination. The vehicle sat for a little over an hour and when restarted, all worked fine. Two days later-fluctuation started again and quit. Has not worked since. About 3 times they started out of no where-fluctuated and quit again. These times when it fluctuated, it only lasted a few seconds. I do not have time to pull the instrument cluster and test the VSS voltage. I replaced the VSS on the rear diff-no change. Cleaned the two prong connector-no change. I am unsure to where the wiring is routed from the sensor to the input. I was wanting to check the wiring. Did not know if there was anything I could do before I pulled the cluster. I know BMW's have common repairs on the clusters, but with all devices quiting at one time-thought it would relate to the VSS or wiring. Thanks for you time. UPDATE: I drove the vehicle last night(after this post) speedometer worked for about 1hr and then fluctuated again-then quit. I have not been able to find a situation while driving that makes it work again. Just seems to all of a sudden. When it was fluctuating-almost seemed like when I accelerated with WOT-it worked better and when let off to shift-fluctuated. That incident was not proven to have complete effect-did not help at all times. I have pushed on the cluster face-no help-tapped on the dash-no help. Thank you again. Also, didnt know if the wiring was ran above the driveshaft, possibly causing wear to the wire from a broken clip. I do not have the proper jack for the BMW-the vehicle is extremely low-and very cautious on raising it up with normal floor jack. I have been using wheel ramps-and with the vehicle being lowered for performance-not very much room at all to work. I could barely replace the VSS on the rear diff.
Update for answer-have not checked-tried to fit my car in with all the others from other people-just replaced sensor-only have about 5-10min on looking at the car and replacing the sensor-hope to have more time soon to spend on it. Thanks for the info.
