Blend door/actuator

I have the dreaded Ram tick when I turned key on and sometimes even with key not in ignition. I narrowed it down to what I thought was a bad actuator behind glove box which I believe is the temperature control part of system. I replaced actuator with one from AutoZone and it still ticks. I read where I better get a OEM parts so I did that installed and still have a tick. Not sure if it's the blend door itself or something else. Thanks much for any help.

Good morning,

Yes, the ticking is usually related to the actuator motor itself.

Did you have the calibration performed for the actuator? That may be the issue as well.

HVAC VERIFICATION TEST
Perform the following procedures to verify that the repair(s) are valid.

Make sure that all accessories are turned off.
Make sure that the battery is fully charged.
Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect all jumper wires and reconnect all previously disconnected components and connectors.
With the scan tool, record and erase all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) from ALL modules.
Turn the ignition off, remove the scan tool from the DLC (Data Link Connector). Open the door and close the door. Wait a minimum 30 seconds, then turn the ignition on. Reconnect the scan tool.
NOTE:
Disconnecting the scan tool and opening and closing the door will allow the controller to enter into sleep mode.

With the scan tool perform the HVAC ACTUATOR CALIBRATION TEST.
Start and run the engine for two minutes while operating all functions of the system that caused the original concern.
With the scan tool, check for DTCs in all modules.
Is the original condition still present or are there any other HVAC DTCs present?

Yes

(Refer to 28 - DTC-Based Diagnostics/HVAC - Diagnosis and Testing) and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure.
No

Repair is complete.

Thanks so much, I will try that. Do you have a recommendation for a scan tool that is reasonable or is this best left to the pros?

Scan tools are expensive. They can run anywhere from $500.00 to $3,000.

It would be a lot cheaper to have a shop do this for you. Most shops have the scan tool that will perform this procedure. It will be a lot cheaper than buying a scan tool.

I had the blend door calibration done and I still have the tick. Is it possible the blend door itself is bad ? I know it's the actuator behind the glove box I can hear it's there and even feel it. I don't believe anything is wrong with the actuator. Any other ideas would be appreciated . Thanks,Ken

The tick is the actuator making the noise. you need to replace it.

Yes I did on my second one I put in. Is there anything special I need to do when installing it as far as position of door or something else I may be doing wrong ?
