If you are replacing the belt you need to replace the tension-er as well. this is for a 2.5L engine that is not a Hybrid if yours is a Hybrid then this is wrong as well. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Just ran the VIN, claims it is a 2.5 hybrid. Looks like the same belt routing though.

The serpentine belt snapped off, so I replaced it and a week later snapped off again. my guess is the top one won't stop spinning which keeps causing the belt to keep coming off and the smooth one below sounds squeaky when it spins so that also needs replacing . Can someone please guide me? I know what I'm doing I just need some guidance/reassuring.

What does the belt look like when it fails? Was it shredded or did it look melted? Can you get a picture of the failed belt where it broke?

The most likely cause of the belt breaking over and over is a misaligned pulley causing the belt to wear or a pulley is seized or binding causing the belt to overheat and break.

Also, the pulley on the top which appears to be the tensioner is shiny. This means the belt is being dragged over it. If you look at the other pulleys they have a black tint to them and the top one does not. However, the smooth one should look shiny. Only the ones with the rips on it should be like this. It may just be the angle but I suspect this may be part of the issue.

Lastly any pulley that squeaks is the bearing that is failing so it should be replaced. Let me know which one is making the noise and we can figure out next steps. Thanks

So I went and got a new tensioner and was told that the shiny one is the water pump and I'm trying to remove it but it's so corroded it looks like its literally one entire piece rather than the little pump itself.. any tips on how to remove it? I've been trying everything.

If you removed the bolts shown in the process then most likely it is the o ring that is holding it in place. More then likely it got hot and "melted" the o ring which is keeping it in place. You can try prying gently and evenly around the three bolt locations to try and walk it out. Once the o ring breaks loose it should just pull out.

Let me know if you have questions about this. Thanks

Well after an entire day of trying to remove it, it finally came out it was not easy. I put the new one in but wasn't sure about the next step would I be flushing the coolant through or "burping" the system. I've never done any before and I lost reading a bunch of different articles online.

Okay. That is good news. Here is the process on filling and bleeding the system. Let me know if you have questions and we can go from there. Thanks

Okay. Is it slipping off the water pump pulley? If this is the case, we need to reinstall the belt and check the alignment of the pulleys. Basically if you look across all the faces of the pulleys they should be perfectly aligned. If one is off it will cause the belt to walk off the pulleys.

I would suggest installing the belt (diagram attached) and then use a socket on the crank pulley bolt and turn the motor over by hand and see what happens to the belt. You should be able to watch where it is walking off the pulleys to find the issue.

The Serpentine belt busted in our 2010 Ford Escape XLT. My husband would like to fix it himself, but we cannot locate a diagram for a 2010 Ford Escape S belt. Also, the air compressor stopped kicking on and off about 4 weeks before this happened. Could they be related? There's absolutely no change in the engine when you try to kick the air on - like it's not getting power to it? Fix suggestions for a mediocre novice mechanic?

Hello, I'm Danny
Here is the serpentine belt diagram you requested. There would be no reason the air conditioning compressor not working would be related. Here is a tutorial showing how to replace a serpentine belt.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/replace-serpentine-belt

As far as the air conditioning there is a cut-off feature that happens when the system drops to low with refrigerant. This happens to keep the compressor from cycling to prevent damage from happening with a low level of refrigerant. Here are a few tutorials to help you get started with diagnosing and filling refrigerant to your ac system.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-air-conditioner-not-working-or-is-weak

I've attached the picture below of the serpentine belt diagram below. Hope this helps and thanks for using 2CarPros.

My Serpentine belt broke due to failed ac compressor. I would like to bypass ac compressor. I found an ac compressor bypass pulley for a 2001-2003 Escape at am-autoparts. Here's my question:

Are the drive belt systems the same in 2003 and 2004?

Once the compressor was taken out it was made clear the clutch was shot and the bearings completely wasted, but It appears as though the compressor is still compressing.

So I'm having some trouble getting my serpentine belt on. I have the right diagram and set the belt up as it is supposed to, then when I pulled the tensioner as far as I could there wasn't enough slack to put the belt on. So I'm stuck Ive been racking my brain for the last few hours and need some help. Is there anyway to adjust that even more? As a side note I did double check that I belt and diagram I have are for my truck.
Thanks for your time,
Mike

Do you still have the old belt? if so, stretch the new belt next to the old belt, and verify the new one is the same length. If your belt routing is correct, that means one thing. The new belt is too short.

Thanks for the reply, I did have the old belt and its the same size and the diagram that I used is for the 2wd 3.0 Escapes. I went back and tried to see if there were any other sizes but that was the only size they had for my truck. I spoke to the tech there and they told me that I was able to adjust the AC compressor pulley (BTW had the compressor unit pulled its just a pulley there now) to help it fit, is this possible?

You only have an auto tension-er, that is what your pulling back. Nothing else is adjustable. You should have a smooth idler pulley. I find once the belt is in all the grooves of the pulleys, it slides right over the smooth idler pretty easily. Have you tried this?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

The vehicle came factory with AC. It was not an option. The result is there is no exact way to route the belt to ensure everything will turn the correct direction and work correctly. What I suggest is to get an AC bypass pulley. They take the place of the compressor and you do not have to change the belt or routing. The part is about the same price as a new belt, so you are better off replacing the bad compressor. An after market parts manufacturer by the name of Dorman makes the part. I believe the part number you need is 34223. Please confirm that is correct for your vehicle with the parts store. I attached a picture of what one looks like.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
