Can you do a load test while terminals connected? Or do they need to be removed and why?

Yes, standard procedure is to leave the cables connected when testing a battery in the vehicle. In this manner, the cable connections will be included in the test. Should the battery fail this way, the cables will be disconnected, then the test should be repeated, possibly after charging the battery for about a half hour.
