that is the fuse box inside the car it has some electronics that run different things. see pic it powers the horn relay which is an integeral part of the smart junction box. I don't see any tsb's or recalls on this but check with a mechanic he may be able to fix it without getting a new junction box.

The relay for the horn is internal so it has to have the whole fuse box replaced or a mechanic will have to wire a separate relay in if there is no short in wiring keeping the draw going.

I have gone through 3 batteries in the past six months. As soon as the car sits for a day or two the battery is dead. Went to get a quick free alternator, starter test and they said both were fine. I finally take it to a dealership. They just called and said my starter is drawing excessive ampage and that is why I have the long crank... I didn't even know I had a long crank.... I ask if the starter would drain the battery as it sits and they said no but that my starter problem would cause it not to start... I keep trying to tell them that my issue is that something is draining my battery... If we recharge the battery the car starts no problem... Something is not adding up to me and they won't allow me to talk to the tech directly??? I really don't understand that part... anyhow will a bad starter drain the battery when the car sits idle for a couple days???

Thank you for your response. I did have them check and they said they found no drains. I guess I will just give the ok to replace the starter but I just can't fight the gut feeling that the starter is not my main problem.... It's just frustrating... Thank you again for your time

My 2006 Ford Explorer has a phantom battery drain every 3-5 days. I took my vehicle into the local Ford dealership and a local auto electric shop where they performed system and draw tests that showed no draw on the battery. They told we they would have to have it hooked up to the tester when the draw was happening in-order to catch it. Could this be something as simple as the radio not shutting down or the mercury switch on the hood light sticking and running the battery down when the car is turned off? Or would their tests catch this sort of draw? It seems kind of ridiculous that the dealership has no answer for this problem.

Good afternoon,

You check current draw, not voltage. Voltage does not drain a battery, current flow does. I attached a guide for you to follow.

I have replaced my car battery, i also replaced the starter and alternator. I took out the #40 fuse and the battery light finally went off. What does that mean? Also before i put the new battery in yesterday i had to keep jumping it off and i changed the wires on the battery. Also the driver door electrical system does not work. On the dash it keeps saying door ajar and the overhead lights stay on. What could that be?

Good morning,

If you install the fuse, does all the other accessories work again?

Can you verify that fuse number? It does not show on my diagrams.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

I attached a wiring diagram for you to view. Make sure you have power to the alternator with the key in the on position.

Something is draining the power in my battery. I have checked the interior lights, headlights, cigarette lighter, glove compartment light, and under the hood but can't find the culprit. Battery and alternator are good. Any suggestions?

if you have a test light, you can take the negative battery cable off, attach 1 end of light to the battery and 1 end to the cable, if it lights up bright you for sure have a drain. with light attached start pulling fuses 1 at a time and see if light goes out. if it does at least you have found the circuit that is causing the problem, make sure you check and see what all is controlled by that fuse. also make sure all doors are shut and hood light bulb is out. hope this helps

If i leave any accessory on for a couple of minutes my battery will be drained and just start clicking. Battery is a optima yellow top and it has been tested and it is fine. Also had the altenator and starter tested and they said they were fine. But it doesnt make sense bc it seems like the altenator isnt charging back up the battery. The truck starts but it usually take two cranks to start. And if i leave my headlights or doors open for a few minutes my battery goes dead.

Start by making sure the battery terminals are clean and tight. Also, the interior lights are not enough to drain a good battery in a couple minutes, so there is more to this.

Let me know about the terminals.

I need you to test for an electrical draw. Here is a how to. What I need you to do is check how much of a draw is present. Also, is the draw still present under the conditions that you mentioned. Finally, if the accessory is causing the draw and you shut the accessory, does the entire draw stop.

Here are the directions. Let me know what you find.

Issue: Battery will not hold a charge if vehicle is off for a short period of time, unless it is fully charged. It can then be turned off for a few hours or more. Over a period of time, it drains. The first sign of trouble was that I noticed that when brake is pressed, the dashboard battery gauge would drop a little. A few days later, the ABS warning light came on, then a few minutes later the battery completely died and had to be jumped (jumped easily). We have had the battery, alternator, and starter/cylinoid all checked. It was recommended that I have a diagnostic on the ABS system to see if something is draining the battery or trace the wiring (which can ultimately cost a bundle just to diagnose). Has anyone encountered this before? I don't want the repair shop to spend hours (and my $$) looking for the problem if I can guide them in the right direction. (It's happened to me before.) The vehicle is a 2000 Explorer with about 100,000 mi. I don't want to keep sinking tons of money in it.

1998 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 114000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
I am having the same problem with my '98 Explorer.

The battery light illuminates while driving if the gas pedal is not engaged. The vehicle started after being dormant overnight, but during the brief period of driving, the veicle just shut down. Responded to jump, but only performed a few blocks before repeating the shut-down-while-driving process.

Also; the windows/locks not functioning, theft/ABS/airbag lights flashing, as well as intermittant beeping. Car also attempts to engage engine when key is out of ignition.

I have had the battery tested & it is presently at the repair shop.

I will post anything i find out as the mechanic lets me know.
