Hi,

A banging noise while changing gears on a manual transmission is not related to the ignition. So if a screwdriver is working for you and you don''t want to address that, then the transmission issue is most likely the clutch is beginning to fail.

Here is a guide that explains this in more detail:

If this sounds like your issue and we can go deeper. However, more than likely you will need to replace the clutch. If this is the case, I would just go ahead and get a clutch kit that includes all the normal components for a clutch replacement because you only want to go in there once. Let me know what you find. Thanks

Thanks

Someone today said it was the tension pulley. he pushed me off today to pop the clutch to crank it because I am having trouble cranking it. he looked under the hood and said it needed to be replaced. could that be it? it just doesn't feel like the clutch.

It could be. Obviously someone looking at it would need to take precedence over someone on the internet. However, based on the way you are describing it, it does sound like a clutch. The clutch may feel fine but that doesn't mean it is fully disengaging when you press it in. This is the most likely cause of a grinding/banging noise only when shifting. However, if the pulley is failed, it could be making noise when you shift because the torque is relieved from the drive train and the engine spins a little more free. Again, I will defer to someone looking at it because I may not be fully understanding the issue. Noises are the hardest thing to try and figure out when you are not looking at the vehicle.

Please let me know what they find because this issue may help others dealing with the same thing and the cause of it would be great info.
