Backfiring when accelerating, shaking and losing power

The car has a tick to the engine that started about 2 weeks ago. last night, it started backfiring with acceleration, shaking and losing power. i can smell exhaust and cant get the car up to speed to get into fifth gear.

More than likely you have a valve issue. I would run a compression check to start and then a cylinder leakage to see where you are loosing the compression assuming it is low. However, this sound like a broken valve spring.
