Automatic transmission slipping and grinds

Hi,

Slipping and grinding is the sign of a worn out transmission. If it was not maintained properly then most likely the seals internal to the unit have failed and are letting pressure by which causes the slipping. The grinding is due to pressure going to places it should not and causes gears to clash. You holding the accelerator up to put "pressure'" on the transmission is you keeping the pressure higher which is overcoming the cut/leaking seals.

Unfortunately, if it were me I would be tearing it apart and rebuilding it. More than likely you will find metal in the pan which would be another reason for a rebuild or replacement.

Thank you for your advise. I just bought this car as a beater from a teenager hoping it would be an easy inexpensive fix. I am leaning toward changing the fluid again along with the cooler line filter and the two pressure sensors and hope for the best. If this doesn't work then I will lean toward a used or re manufactured transmission. Thanks again for the information, any suggestions to my plan will be greatly appreciated.

That is not a bad plan but unlikely to solve it. However, it is the right idea. If the fluid has metal then the filter is clogged causing pressure issue. Also, if there sensor are off then that is going to cause shift issues. Again, it is worth a try because IF you are correct then you just saved a lot of money (or postponed spending it).

Thank You for your reply. I can only hope for the best although I have to agree with you I think the transmission is on its last leg. I have been looking around for a used inexpensive low mileage transmission as well. Maybe it'll help for a while. Have a great weekend!
