My 2002 Audi A6, 53K miles, was making a weird noise. Mechanic says front wheel bearing needs to be replaced and axle on the left is bad but can hold off for now but it will need to be done sooner than later.
I asked for a 'ballpark' cost -- He said approx. $300 -- for just the wheel bearing to be replaced -- but that's not a final cost b/c it will depend on part availability and he's trying to not have to go through Audi obviously and get best pricing.
1. Is the axle something that needs attention now and what should it cost?
2. Is that a fair estimate for bearings work?
I was going to Audi but since warranty expired, I can't afford their prices but am car illiterate myself. Thanks for any assistance.
