We have a 2001 Audi A6 with less than 68000 miles. The Check Engine, Air Bag, and BAttery Lights are all on at once. Today the battery was dead, but when I jumped it and took it for a battery test they said the battery was good. As I drove home the car would not allow me to shift manually and only rode in D. ALso the brake light started to flash and beep during driving.

Help!

I broke down and took the car in today for a check. The alternator is outputting too much power (16) and needs to be replaced. $1100!

Anyone else know if I can repair this myself?

Hi toddmitchem,

A replacement remanufactured part would cost about $ 470.00

Labor time is 3.1 and 3.5 hours for 2.7 or 2.8 liters respectively.

If the voltage output is too high, replacement of the voltage regulator should solve th eproblem,

Part cost, voltage regulator $116.63.
Labor time is 4.2 or 4.6

Are you saying that the Volt Regulator is the problem? Cool. That sounds better. Can I do that myself? Where is it in the car? Does anyoen know how to change it?

Hi toddmitchem, It is item # 7 in the diagram. You need to remove the alternator to get at it.

If the voltage is too high, the voltage regulator is the prime suspect.

Great. Do you have a resource that can best describe the procedure in its entirety? If I decided not to go this route and had a mechanic fix it what is the cost?

Hi toddmitchem,

The costing had been posted in my first reply. I do not know the labor rate at you area so the book labor time was stated instead.

You can check on the net for supplies or try your loacl Autozone parts outlet.

Sorry I don't have any info to pass to you regarding the step by step procedures.
