2000 Audi A6 Rear prop shaft seal

During routine service, I was told by my dealership that I had to replace the rear prop shaft seal flange for $900. The new audi redesigned part was around $400 and the labor 450. Does this sound reasonable. I was told that that this redesigned part to fix it was not covered by audi.

Your stealership is wrong. The tail of the casing was redesigned, but the new seal is only to be used on trannys that were built with the new flange. The old seal is still available and should be used on the older flange. To their defense, VAG coded the new seal as superceding the old one, but that's not the case. The correct seal for the older flange is 018-409-399-B. Be prepared to be raped for about $30. The job is big as the exhaust must be dropped to access the seal. I've tried to do it without it and it's not practical. Takes about 3 or 4 hours. Good luck.
