a4 1.9tdi transmition problem

If the car is having the problem and I shift it from P to R then to neutral and back to Reverse it goes in failsafe mode and (PRND) are blinking on dash. Once this happens the stick can be moved freely to any position (with out pressing brake ) car can go in reverse but slips making moving backwards almost impossible, when I switch to manual shift it works (shoing on LCD).
The Check engine light is not on but i did get a trouble code 17090 (P0706) - Transmission Range Sensor.
