98 Audi starts, then stops

I have a 98 Audi A4 Avant, 95K, with 2.8L

It starts, and runs as long as you keep you foot on the gas pedal. When released, it dies. A friend ran a code, and thought throttle _ _ _ ? I think it is the type that does not have a cable connecting the pedal to the carb.
Any ideas as to the problem, and how to fix?
