My 1999 Audi A4 "surges" or lunges forward sometimes, especially in the morning when it is not quite warmed up. I can't tell if the engine is revving slightly or if the car is "slipping" forward. It is an automatic. You really need to slip the car into neutral when at a stop because this sudden, intermittent surge could cause you to hit the car in front of you if you did not have your foot on the brake.

Have you heard of this? These Audis have so many modules, electrical complications I cannot believe it but my mechanic (who is pretty good) simply cannot pinpoint this problem. Any advice you might give would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi dm1890,

The idling speed is too high due to vacumn leakages thus the surging.

Check for clogging of coolant along bypass hoses around the intake manifold.
