When we pour in coolant or water it goes through reserve tank, (not leaking on ground), till eventually fills to max line. We can drive the car a short distance only before temp light starts blinking.
Car starts right up and runs great except for the light blinking, and of course when we stop to check, the liquid is way down in the reserve tank. The temp gauge stays right in the middle where we're told it should be, for short distances. If we drive it too long after light is flashing, the gauge does start going up, at which time we stop and haven't driven the car much more than a couple of miles since this occurred.
We brought the car to a local mechanic, not a European car specialist. We're in a small town without one. He says it's a blown head gasket. Except for the coolant problem, which I realize is a beg problem, the car drives great, shifts perfectly, starts right up. Does this sound like a blown head gasket? We don't have many repair options in the town we're in. Thanks for your help.

Likely to be an Intake manifold gasket failure allowing coolant into cumbustion chamber. White smoke from exhaust good indicator.
