Transmission problem

hi, my brother drove the car and tried to put it into reverse. to do this you have to push down the gear stick and push it into first gear. he must have done this a little too hard, as now it will not go into any gear, it feels loose when trying to put it into other gears, and it just drives forward.
could the vigorous gear shift have shifted the gearbox totally, such as a gearbox or engine mount problem, or could it just be the gear shift cable/lever broken or loose?
